Homemade Frozen Coffee
This creamy, slushy-like iced coffee beverage hits the spot on hot summer days when you’re craving a cold coffee drink.
With just 5 ingredients and less than 5 minutes you can be sipping on the most delicious frozen coffee!
If you’ve tried making frozen coffee at home before and it came out too thin or perhaps too watery, you definitely need to give this recipe a try.
I’ve figured out the key to getting bold coffee flavor without adding too much liquid or needing to pre-make coffee ice cubes way in advance!
What is Frozen Coffee?
Frozen Coffee is a blended iced coffee drink that’s similar to a Dunkin Frozen Coffee or Starbucks Coffee Frappuccino.
The drink consists of coffee, cream, sweetener and lots of ice. It’s blended on high speed until it’s mostly creamy with some teeny tiny bits of ice throughout.
Truly replicating frozen coffee drinks from the Dunkins and Starbucks of the world can be a bit of a challenge. This is because coffeeshops use thick, super-concentrated roasts specifically made for frozen blended beverages.
If only I could get my hands on some Frapp Roast!
But by using cold brew concentrate, readily available in most stores, you can make an equally tasty frozen coffee at home.
Why You’ll Love this Recipe
No coffee brewing or espresso machine needed. Handcrafted coffee beverages with lots of milk in them are usually made with shots of espresso. This recipe features bottled concentrated cold brew coffee so there’s no need to brew strong coffee or espresso and wait for it to cool down.
No need to prep coffee ice cubes ahead of time. My recipe gets all its coffee flavor from concentrated cold brew coffee. This allows the drink to be packed with coffee flavor without adding an excessive amount of liquid.
Some other frozen coffee recipes have you to freeze coffee into cubes hours in advance as a way of adding more coffee sans liquid.
With concentrated coffee as the base of the drink, it’s simply not necessary to freeze coffee into ice cubes.
Delicious summer drink ready in minutes. It’s less than 5 minutes from the time the craving for a frozen coffee hits, until you’re sipping on this cool coffee beverage! It’s quick, easy and certainly budget-friendly compared to coffee shop prices.
How to Make Frozen Coffee
This drink is made in a blender. Since it has over a cup of ice in it, use a blender that’s got decent crushing power.
Ingredients
Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate – Concentrated cold brew coffee is a game-changer when it comes to making homemade blended coffee beverages.
Since a small amount of cold brew concentrate has lots of coffee flavor, you don’t have to add too much in order to achieve bold taste.
Just grab a bottle of your favorite brand, but make sure to get the concentrated kind and not ready-to-drink.
Refrigerate it when you get home. This way it’s nice and cold for making frozen coffee.
I use Starbucks Signature Black Cold Brew Concentrate. They also sell a few other blends that would be excellent for making flavored homemade frozen coffees.
Whole Milk – I use whole dairy milk for this drink, but you can substitute it with your favorite type.
Just keep in mind, different kinds of milk may change the overall texture of this blended drink.
Ice – For the best-tasting frozen coffee, make it with ice from filtered water. A Brita water filter pitcher is nice to have on-hand for making crisp ice and drinks.
Sugar – Granulated sugar, sugar substitutes and simple syrup are all great ways to sweeten this coffee. I recommend using what you normally add to coffee.
Xanthan Gum (optional) – Blended, iced beverages tend to separate over time.
A pinch of xanthan gum, which is an emulsifier and stabilizer, keeps everything blended together. It’s completely optional, but if you’re a slow sipper, you might want to give it a try.
